As far as Indie games go, I'd also recommend the Cthulhu Saves the World/ Breath of Death VII combo pack on Steam. It's only $3 or so, and has two SNES-style JRPGs that are pretty funny, largely at the expense of JRPG tropes and the Cthulhu mythos (in the case of Cthulhu saves the world).
Has anyone tried Frozen Synapse? It's a pretty cool looking tactical game, and the neatest thing about it is that turns are simultaneous, and movement isn't locked to a grid. I played the demo and it seemed cool, but to really get into its complexity I'll probably just have to buy it, because the learning curve is too high for me to mentally commit to for just a demo-length experience.
Also, Minecraft leaves beta tomorrow and officially "releases," so today is the last day to get it at a discounted price, if anyone is still interested that doesn't have it yet.

Permalink Reply by Transience8985 on November 19, 2011 at 1:52pm Minecraft is totally a clunky game. The graphics are poo (though some mods smooth the textures out), jumping feels weird, and combat is just click as fast a possible and hope the monster dies before you. It's a love it or hate it type of deal. Though the thing people like about it is that it's a vast sandbox that lets you get creative and build things, kind of like playing with Legos as a kid. Though the game aspect comes in the fact that you have to get building materials by venturing out into the world and mining, chopping down trees, and otherwise gathering shit while contending with monsters that are trying to kill you. If you die you lose everything you're carrying (though you can build storage boxes if you want to leave things at home so you don't lose them). People have built some pretty cool stuff, like castles to live in, roller coasters, and they've also exploited game logic to make things like automated monster death traps and rudimentary computers with basic functions.
TLDR: The game definitely looks like something one dude put together in his basement, but the fun you get from it is really what you make of it.
